2009 Season

Wedding Bells
Mike Zimmerman and Shelli Kollick celebrated the bonds of matrimony at the bandstand Saturday, May 16th.  With family and friends watching the skies, they completed the half hour ceremony before the thunderstorms burst forth future Capon water.  The wedding party then retreated to sunset lodge for a cookout dinner and reception.  www.picasaweb.google.com/Caponsf

Five more destination weddings are scheduled in 2009 and at least two more opportunitites exist for weekend events (Aug. 28-30 & Sept 4-7).  Come join the couples who begin their wedded bliss at Capon!

MYSTERY, HISTORY AND MAYHEM A SUCCESS!
For the 75 guests who came for the pre-opening weekend April 24-26, the weather was picture postcard perfect.  Otherwise, mayhem was the order of the day- from listening to Natalie Cole before dinner, to the adult only atmosphere of enjoying wine with your meal, guests were treated to three days of feasting and fun.  Friday night's highlight was the candlelight history tour/ghost hunt combo.  Once again, Pete Budnyk delivered an outstanding presentation of the pre-Austin family Capon history from the mid 1700s to the 1930s.  Just about everyone hung around for the talk, walk and slide show through time.  The late night owls stayed up with Rodney Whitacker of the Maryland Ghost Hunting Society group to see if there was any paranormal activity in the West Virginia or the Fairfax.

Here is the summary of their report dated May 18, 2009:

Investigative Results: Orbs were captured on the grounds (balls of light that show up on digital photography)  No EVPs (Disembodied voices) were captured on audio devices.  Video taken with 8 cameras (3) in the Fairfax, (1) West Virginia , and (2) in the Kitchen area and  (1) sitting area of the main house showed no signs of paranormal activity
Conclusions: We found the resort contained a lot of orb activity on its grounds. Although the presence of orbs is almost always found in areas of paranormal activity, their presence alone does not constitute a haunting. Based on the results of our investigation of Capon Springs and Farms; the Maryland Society of Ghost Hunters has determined the investigation to be inconclusive. Further investigation of the resort is necessary.

On Saturday, the new version of Caponchase sent 11 teams scratching their heads to discover the identity of one of Capon's historical figures.  After the 3 hour time limit, 4 teams found the right answer- though most did it by sheer coincidence or some random form of intuition rather than cracking the logic of the clues themselves!  With the traditional Saturday lunch served on the hill, the theatre troupe set the stage for the "whodunnit" mystery show finale after dinner.  Ann Permar of Raleigh, NC answered all the questions and cracked the case:  it was Miss Scarlett with the rope in the dining room!

WHEN CAN I VISIT CAPON?
Starting Thursday, April 30th,  come feast on the traditional steak dinner cookout at Sunset Lodge. We stay open for the weekend, but close down temporarily Sunday, May 3.  When we open again on May 6th, you can come see us anytime up to early November. In general, weekday space during May, June, September and October is available even up to the last minute. Call us anytime, as cancellations do occur even during peak times.  See Current Openings and Specials page for specific reservation opportunities.

Instead of visiting Capon, we come to visit you!  The 2009 Capon Road Show stopped in Charlottesville, VA on Saturday, March 28th.  Thanks to the generosity of the Matt Caesar family, guests and neighbors came and enjoyed meeting other "Caponites" in the area as new folks were introduced to the Capon experience.  Jonathan brought along the new DVD, Capon literature and a whole bunch of Capon goodies.  Where will he turn up next?  Day Trips: Spend a beautiful Spring or Fall day up on Capon’s golf course! Enjoy 18 holes of golf with cart and lunch on most weekdays in May, June, September or October for $45 per person! (Even weekend space is sometimes available!) Feel like taking a day just to pamper yourself? Why not come and try a spa treatment? Costs vary depending on the service. Check with us about availability by calling the Main Office at (304) 874-3695 or during the season at the Spa (304) 874-3004.

austin1WE KNOW IN THEORY NOTHING CHANGES AT CAPON... smile BUT WHAT FACILITY IMPROVEMENTS CAN WE LOOK FOR THIS YEAR?
LODGING: The Austin Cottage will be the last in the line of lodging facilities to get a completely interior renovation.  Crews began digging out the back hillside in late October to make room for the enlarged sleeping space and bathrooms on both floors.  All eight guest rooms will be large enough for families of four and the first floor rooms in the back will have private porches. Click here for March 17 photos:

***Consider introducing new groups or individuals to Capon by coming over for the day. Call ahead to set up a tour of the grounds and facilities and if it’s during our season, enjoy a sample of Capon’s delicious food!

CAPON WEEKLY:
