At the base of the Great North Mountain, in the foothills of the Alleghenies,
Capon Springs is a two-hour drive west of Washington, DC. Since we are
just over the West Virginia border, the nearest major city is Winchester,
VA. This physical separation from the sounds and sights of city life
enable guests to leave the manmade world behind and immerse themselves
in the abundance of nature.
LAND:
Hiking, Fishing and Fossils
Our
4700 acres, much of which is heavily wooded, provide plenty of opportunities
to experience the natural world. The Tuscarora Trail, a walking path
of the Appalachian Trail system runs through part of Capon’s land.
We have five maintained trails with both scenic overlooks and deep woods
hiking. A detailed trail map with topographic features is available at
the Front Desk. Most Saturdays, our naturalist leads guests on a featured
trail, exploring the amazing natural world surrounding us.
Interested
in the big catch? Try our two half-acre fishing ponds which are stocked
each year with blue-gill, bass, catfish, and trout. Capon will supply
rowboats, life jackets, bamboo fishing poles, and our very own bait (extra
bread from the bake shop!) Hook a keeper (larger than 8 inches), and
we will clean and prepare the catch for breakfast for you the next day.
Licenses are not required for either of our ponds. A fishing contest
takes place during the first weekend in June. This event coincides with
the entire state of West Virginia’s open fishing
dates, when no license is required to fish in any of West Virginia’s
waters.
Want to take home a piece of history? The exposed shale
formations near Capon’s main grounds reveal layers of metamorphic
shale and slate rock. Dig a little and you’ll find a fossil treasure
to take home. Fossil hammers are available at the Front Desk.
WATER:
Drinking, Swimming, Soaking
Famous for more than two centuries, a collection of deep ground water
springs provides an abundant unending supply of fresh mountain water
to all the guest rooms, the kitchens, the fountains, the swimming pool
and beginning in 2007, the Hygeia Bath House and
Spa.
A bottle of refreshing Capon Water is provided in all guest rooms. Please
take it home with you when you leave so you may enjoy the benefits of
good healthy spring water between your Capon visits. You are also welcome
to bring your own containers and fill them at any of the fountains around
the grounds. We also have containers for you to purchase if you choose.
FARMS:
Providing Nature's Bounty
Fresh
fruits and vegetables are grown on our farm using organic fertilizers
and compost from Capon’s compost pile. Hens wander in and out of
the hen house, ranging for tasty treats, providing Capon with delicious
brown eggs. Visit “Hog Heaven” – a short walk from
the Fish
Pond – where
calves have taken up residence with the pigs. Check the tripod by the
Front Desk for scheduled feeding times and watch the pigs make pigs out
of themselves!
