The 2024 Season runs May 2 through Nov 9 Fall Openings
The Capon Capers, originating as a group working out of the offices of the Central Intelligence Agency is Northern Virginia, came for the very first time on opening weekend in 1949. This will be the 75th anniversary of that occasion. Not only that, they have returned each and every September as well since then, making their total visits now 150, with the 151st starting May 2nd.
Typically the group will average about 24 to 28 for each outing. Their base of operations is the Fairfax Cottage that contains beds to accommodate as many as 32. The Capers determine on their own who stays in which room. Originally this was based on a first come/first reserved basis. That meant some would arrive so early on a Friday morning that we would check them in while we were moving the porch furniture out from the living room, where it was stored all winter.
The weekend basically consists of golf and food for them. None of the golf has ever been stellar, yet an intricate handicap system always makes the competition close. The winner of the weekend’s tournament becomes the organizer of the next event, making some more than happy to finish in second place! There are dozens that have been a part of this group over the years, and I can name so many of them just off the top of my head.
This Saturday, Capon will host a special dinner at Sunset Lodge to commemorate the Capers’ 75th anniversary, with the likelihood of more memorabilia being added to their special cabinet located in the hall outside the library.
Capon has always prided itself on rich tradition and history. What better example than a group that initially visited in 1949, regularly comes twice each season, and shows no signs of slowing down! Here’s to you, Capon Capers and congratulations!
