Step 3 of 4:

Understand the Magic

What truly makes Capon Springs different from other resorts are all the “extras” that you just won’t find anywhere else. Operated by multiple generations of the same family, you are welcomed into a warm and caring atmosphere where everything is based on the honor system.   The set-menu and meal times mean all you have to do is show up when the bell rings!

When was the last time you and your family had an opportunity to completely “unplug” and spend quality time together?  Now imagine how great it would be that as your Capon experience draws to a close, you actually feel completely relaxed, restored, and reenergized- and already dreaming about your return!

The Virginia Cottage at Capon SpringsThe Virginia Cottage, with its front porch along the Capon Run, is the only guest building to be completely torn down and rebuilt. The original white wooden cottage was built during the old resort days as a part of the stable complex and was used as a Saddle Shop.

Soon after he brought the property, Lou Austin renamed it the Virginia Cottage and by 1936 guests were enjoying it as Capon’s first “Honeymoon Cottage”. In 1989, when maintenance crews found that the foundation had rotted, it was decided to build a “new” Virginia Cottage. Pete Budnyk designed the building, which paid careful attention to handicap accessibility.

It was built in the same vernacular style as other Capon cottages, with white siding and green shutters, and the traditional front porch fronting the creek. Today’s Virginia Cottage has a shared central living room and five bedrooms, each with its own private bath. Two of the rooms are large enough for families of five, while the three other rooms have one double bed, perfect for couples or singles. Together it can accommodate ten to fourteen people comfortably. These nicely furnished rooms have hosted many family reunions and meetings.

Guest Reviews

“We LOVE ‘our’ little Virginia cottage after staying there for the first time in 1989! It has seen our family grow from the original 12 to now include spouses and our own grandchildren. We love having a central living room and own front porch and have quite often been the place where millenials gather to play games, listen to music, and grow up together. It was even our “residence of choice” where our daughter had her destination wedding at Capon in 2014. One more thing… the West Virginia may be roomier, but the Virginia is closer to the laundry, LOL.” – Leah-Kay R., Clark Summit, PA

“The stream running in front of the cottage is wonderful. It’s so nice to sleep with the windows open or just sit on the porch and listen to the water. Also the common room is nice for playing games as a family on a rainy day.” – Chris S., Gaithersburg, MD
